Ola, a trade name of ANI Technologies Private Limited has recently launched its new shuttle bus services in Bangalore. A six year old company extended their services to provide transportation between small routes.
Ola provides different range of cabs varying from lower to higher charges. It operates its business through a mobile application named Ola. This app is used to reserve the cab for travel along with that Ola money, Ola cafe, Ola offline, Ola credit and Ola Corporate facilities are available. It is one of the most popular transport service providers in India. This app already covers autorickshaws, traditional taxis and other private vehicles all around the India.
Online cab provider Ola has launched its new shuttle bus services in Bangalore and Gurgaon(near Delhi) on September 2016. It was officially announced on September 19, 2016 and launched on 21st of the same month. They named the recently launched service as Ola Shuttle.
Initially, it was started with 100 shuttles covering 20 routes in these two cities. Ola claimed to have 500 shuttles which will cover 100 routes in India where the more cities will be announced in the next quarter. It promised to offer a ride with less than $1 which was cheaper when compared to other private taxis which will cost about $4 to $6.
The new services were introduced to counter act the activities of its competitor Uber, an American based transportation company which was concentrating to expand its services in India. Uber recently announced the launch of Uber pool a car pooling service.
In Asia, India is one of the fast growing economies and the population will be nearly 1.3 billion has a rapidly evolving middle class. These peoples have their smartphone and disposable income. This service can be accessible through the Ola app as a separate option.
Shuttle service provided by the Ola mainly focused on the travellers who travel a short distance in a regular basis. CEO of Ola stated that they will provide a reliable and comfortable travel to the commuters. They are considered to be the major customers of Ola shuttle. The main reason behind the start of Ola Shuttle was to complement and expand on its tax offerings.
Recently, Ola opened up about its Application Programming Interface (API) for developers to integrate their platform services with their application. This API used to integrate the seat availability, booking and tracking of shuttle and also the estimation of time for services based on the Ola’s data.
Addition to this, Ola’s documentation also suggested that the platform will allow the API to be used for application configuration like geo locations, metrics and other options. It is used to fetch the notifications and translations to create and activate the user accounts and also to validating email and resetting passwords.
This API does not support integrations for other services like Ola Money, Ola store and other newly introduced services in app. Uber, competitor of Ola launched its API in August which makes the app to send destination address to the Uber app, provide estimation of fares, display pick up time and many more.
As per reports, Ola was in the process of raising yet another round of funding, on the wedge of closing a $400 million round at a $2.5 billion valuation in the month of April 2016. When the other leading ride hailing companies like Uber tried to expand its business on other countries whereas Ola tried to dominates its home country.
A great rival of Ola, Meru launched its carpooling services in July; TaxiForSure, also has carpooling services which also owned by Ola and BlaBlacar, which launched in the month of January on 2015 also offers ride sharing services. But Ola’s shuttle bus services were launched in a huge scale in India when compared to the previous existing shuttle services.
Other company which starts these services are ZipGo which operates in Bangalore, Shuttl which offers it services at Delhi NCR and Cityflo that serves in Mumbai.
Shuttle will come with all the facilities of air-conditioning, Wi-Fi access and in-vehicle infotainment. During this ride, users have to share the shuttle with 12 to 20 members. Ola shuttle will not work like a traditional Ola services in the matter of approaching passengers. These shuttles may be either sole proprietorship- owned and run by the owners or with the company engaged the same work notably smaller than Ola in order to find the passengers. This will be linked to the Ola app to identify the details of riders.
The expansion of Ola cabs with this newly introduced Ola shuttle made a key point for the company. When Ola raised its series E round of funding and at least $50 million dollar will be invested in this shuttle bus services. The company states that it contains more than 250,000 registered vehicles and serves about 750,000 rides each day. Like its rival Uber, Ola also introduces a scheme of food delivery.
Ola was well ahead of its nearest competitor Meru at 12% which makes the company to utilize the available opportunity to target its aim more than before. It was the first time that a transportation company starts to work with a larger scale of shuttles.
According to the Softbank’s statement, Ola holds a market share of about 80% in the current scenario. The total fund coming out after the $400 million series E round was about $680 million. The company used this round aggressively to scale themselves.
Another new outcome of Ola is ride sharing service known as Ola Share which decreases the individual cost for travel in addition with the low fuel consumption and reduces stress of driving. It follows the concept of group of people sharing a single vehicle whose destination will be on the same direction. This facility gains popularity among the people who work in a same or nearby place and who live in the same locality.
Ola Share provides a new feature of creating a group with the school goers, office goers, friends and people who live in the same or nearby locality to make the ride easier. A share ride request can be placed in the app to find the other riders who are travelling to the same destination. It works in a social ride-sharing method and also offers the users to travel with their own group. This method of social car-pooling method makes the user to ride with the people with whom they feel comfortable.
Bhavish Aggarwal, co-founder and CEO of Ola, told that these new shuttle services can provide a comfortable and reliable travel to the commuters who use their own vehicle, cabs or other options of personal transportation. This app helps the user to track shuttle on the map, book their seats and to pay for the ride.

Ola introduces a new feature called ‘number masking’ which would not disclose the user’s phone numbers to the drivers and the calls made by the drivers would be recorded for future reference.
Ola shuttle makes its way to get popularity among the people who are travelling to a place on a regular basis and it also creates a better feel to the users by its different form of services.
